Project Proposal
For my three week LINK internship in March, I plan on interning with the media director at Coldwell Banker. Coldwell Banker Heritage House Realtors is a realtor firm here in Durango. My mentor is in charge of the photography, design, and videography for the company. He uses programs such as Photoshop, Microsoft Publisher, and Final Cut Pro (the same software used in Hollywood to make some feature movies). Over the course of my internship, I will become more familiar with all of these programs. My mentor is Hal Lott who I've known through my family for several years. He is the media director at Coldwell Banker and therefor is in charge of directing the media. All media goes through him- including editing and design. He will be able to teach me a lot about design and editing. He is very willing to offer me a wide variety of tasks during my internship, which is exciting because there isn't one specific thing I want to work on. I’m very motivated for this experience.
Because I’m unsure of my career goals for the future, this internship will be positive for me because I will get to be involved with both a creative and business side of things. I will go to a professional environment every day and be expected to communicate with my mentor, clients, and realtors in an appropriate way. I will be expected to complete all tasks and fulfill all expectations they have for me to the best of my ability.
One idea we discussed for my LINK project was a short video essay about your job: interview people, yourself, etc. We could shoot some still photos and video of what I learned and then my mentor could help me put it together in a video. Through this I would learn about Final Cut Pro, the same software they use in Hollywood to make feature movies. I am excited to use this software and be able to use it for projects in the future.
I will be learning a lot about videography and photography so I will need the editing skills I obtain to make my final project. I will need to transition between several different programs and work on several different tasks simultaneously. I will need to be professional, advocate for myself, and be responsible with the tasks I am assigned. It will be important for me to communicate in an effective and professional way with all of the people in the workplace.
During the course of my internship I will most likely be working on my project in the office. As soon as I've learned some of the basics and spent time shadowing my mentor, I will begin the construction of my video after I've learned the basics. As I learn more, I will add more to my project. I will need to use my time efficiently if I want my project to be complete by the exhibition. It will be crucial for me to ask questions when I’m unsure of what I‘m doing so that my mentor can assist me.
One of the largest obstacles I've had to overcome while setting up my internship was figuring out an internship that was right for me. In the first stages of the process, I wanted to do an internship in the medical field, but realized that because of both confidentiality issues and the fact I wanted something with a bit of creativity, that that wasn't the right choice. Through this process, I learned that it was okay for me to be unsure of exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but this was an opportunity for me to figure out things I desire in the future. This is a great opportunity for me to determine what I desire in a workplace and career.
Currently, I am feeling pretty good about my placement for my LINK internship. I feel like I will have a good balance between doing what I want and having directed tasks. Because I’ve worked on photography projects with my mentor in the past, I know he’ll be a good teacher for me. He understands the requirements for LINK and knows what I would like to get out of my internship. I’m very excited to spend three weeks in March at Coldwell Banker. It is an excellent chance for me to experience the “real world”. The LINK program is a fantastic opportunity and I want to feel like I utilized every minute of it. I believe my placement can achieve this.
